SURPLUS PAD AND RAIL YARD CABLE IN STANLEY, ND

Stanley handles two kinds of freight and both of them involve cable. Rail brings material in for the oilfield, and trucks take it out to pads scattered across the county. The surplus is spread across a yard, a shop, and a couple of trucks rather than collected in one place.

The result is a yard full of partial drums. A 15kV reel that served one pad and came back half used, a spool of control cable from a panel that got replaced, and a coil of VFD cable pulled for a drive that was upsized.

Pad work and what comes back

Cable that has been to a pad has been handled by a crew in a hurry. Expect the jacket scuffed at the ends, the tag wired on crooked, and the outside wraps dirty. None of that changes the conductor, but it does change how the reel should be described. Dirt on a jacket is not damage. A jacket pinched between a drum and a forklift is, and the pinch is usually near the flange. Check the tag first, then the jacket, then the ends.

Voltage class is the first fact to establish. A 15kV cable and a 600V cable can look similar on a dirty drum, and the print near the end is the only reliable way to tell them apart. If the print has worn off, cable diameter and conductor count will separate a 600V cable from a 15kV one most of the time.

Rail yard and terminal electrical

Rail-adjacent buildings take tray cable and TC-ER in long runs, plus copper feeder for service. A run that gets shortened during a rebuild leaves a reel with a known remainder, which is the easiest kind of material to review. Tray cable from a rebuild often has one end cut square and the other torn, and the torn end tells you it was pulled rather than unrolled.

Control cable shows up around anything with a sequence: gates, signals, and building systems. Multiconductor with a numbered jacket is simple to identify. Unnumbered cable needs the conductor count and the gauge instead. A short length of numbered control cable is still useful to somebody matching an existing run.

Loading and freight from Stanley

Stanley is where US-2 meets ND-8, so a trailer can head west, east, or north without much deadhead. We buy from sellers in Stanley and the yards around it, so drums go flatbed with a tarp and cartons go LTL. Say whether the reel is still on a service truck or already in the yard, since that decides the pickup address.

Wire sitting in Stanley?

Send the reel count and a photo of the tags. If it loads with a forklift, say so — it changes the plan.
