SURPLUS WIRE FROM OLDER BUILDINGS IN VALLEY CITY, ND
Older buildings in Valley City were wired when a run was cheap to install and expensive to change. When one gets renovated, the new wire goes in beside the old, and the old rarely comes out clean. The building ends up carrying two generations of wire, and only one of them is in use.
What comes out instead is a mix. Pulls that were abandoned mid-run, MC added for a circuit that got moved twice, fire-alarm cable run through a ceiling that later got opened, and a service feeder replaced because the panel changed.
Retrofit pulls in older buildings
Abandoned wire is worth looking at, but describe it as abandoned. It has been bent around corners, it may be nicked at a staple, and the insulation can be older than the building's last inspection sticker. None of that rules it out. It just needs to be stated. Old insulation gets brittle at the bends, so a coil that looks sound can crack when it is pulled out.
Length matters more than usual here, because a fifty-foot pull out of a wall is a coil, not a reel, and a coil is priced differently. Measure the long ones if you can and estimate the rest. If the pull came out in one piece, say so. That is unusual and it changes the number.
Service upgrades and what is left over
A service change leaves the old feeder and the new one on site at the same time, and the leftover is usually the new one. Copper in 2/0 and 3/0, aluminum SER, and a length of grounding conductor that was cut long. Aluminum SER from a service change is often the full length minus a few feet, which makes it one of the more useful things a renovation leaves behind.
If the meter base moved, the old cable may be short and the new cable may be long. Both are describable. Send the size, the conductor count, and whether the jacket print is still readable. Grounding conductor is easy to overlook and easy to describe: gauge, insulation color, length.
